Some of the most popular designs by the Seppuku Pistols are their clever Hanjie- a traditional riddle solving game that involves guessing the meanings hidden in letters and pictures. Adding these designs to tenugui and yukata bring back a playfulness for what could be mistaken as an old fashioned design. In an era where there is hesitation with action, perhaps it's ok to let a little loose and have some fun with tenugui designs.
「Taking the Piss」
Can you make out the riddle? The “ふ” (pronounced “fu”) letter has been dragged down ( which in Japanese is “sage”. Next we can see an arrow ( “ya” in Japanese) piercing a hand (“te” in Japanese). Combine all of the above to say “Fusakeyagatte”, or “to take the piss”. Let’s see if your Japanese friends can solve this riddle!
This original tenugui (hand towel) has been dyed with the traditional method “Chu-sen". Popularized in the Meiji Era (1868-1912), Chu-sen is a uniquely Japanese method of dyeing fabric - typically used for tenugui (traditional hand towels) and yukata (summer kimono). This KAPUKI ART Tenugui Series brings together the quality of traditional Japanese craftsmanship with unique visuals brought by the Seppuku Pistols.
