At first glance, the kanji in the middle of the grid looks like “koi” or “love”. Upon further inspection, you will find the kanji in fact says “aku” or “evil”. The square boxes represent “masu” - Japanese wooden boxes used to measure rice (now most used as a sake cup). The word “masu masu” in Japanese means “increasingly”. All together, the design reads “masu masu aku” or “increasingly evil”. How did your Japanese friends react as they unpacked this riddle?
