The washi paper used is "Nashio Washi," an important intangible cultural property with a history of 500 years.
Its distinctive feature is that it is made by adding mud.
The mud mixed in prevents insects from infesting the wood and keeps the color from fading, even over the years.
It is a traditional craft that Japan takes pride in, and it is said that without this paper it would be impossible to restore national treasures.
