This kimono by Mayotae features a beautiful arabesque pattern that is particularly eye-catching.
Arabesque, with its flowing intertwining vines and leaves, is an auspicious pattern that symbolizes prosperity and longevity.
Hemp cloth is not well known among Japanese people.
In fact, during the Jomon period, hemp grew in abundance across the Japanese archipelago and was widely used as a household item and food.
Cannabis is also considered a "sacred plant" and is offered to the gods as "Oonusa" in Shinto rituals, and is still used today as hemp string and rope in shrines.
After approximately three years of research and trial and error, "Masyotei" has been revived with a rich texture reminiscent of hemp cloth from hundreds of years ago.
